What To Wear To Job Interview

Attending an interview for a corporate job will require a tailored suit in navy, burgundy, grey or black. Your suit must be fit; otherwise, it will not look good regardless of the cost. Wear a brighter colour shirt or blouse to complement the suit. You do not need to buy an expensive suit or a new suit if you cannot afford to do so. You can borrow, rent or even recycle your wardrobe. Whichever way, you need to look your best and create the impression the employer or interviewer wants to see. Use minimal accessories – watch, jewellery need to be conservative. For example, only wear wedding or engagement rings if you are married, if not just one ring will do, do not wear dangling earrings. Your makeup must be minimal.

Overall, do not dress up as if you are going to a concert or party. Be business-like.

Summary of what to wear to job interview:

For more creative jobs, the look will be less sombre and different from the corporate job. Dress cheerfully and appropriately for the job. If unsure, telephone the prospective employer to ask for the dress code prior to the interview. However, do not wear skimpy dress or skirt; make sure the length of your skirt or dress is just above the knee.

Again, do not wear bling, bling, wear minimal jewellery, light makeup – do not turn up like a masquerade. Coordinate your outfit – not too bright and not too dull.

Things to avoid:

  • Flat shoes
  • Body hugging clothes
  • Maxi dress
  • Skimpy skirts or dress
  • Revealing top or shirt that show too much cleavage
  • Bling, bling (too much jewellery)
  • Jeans
  • Do not wear perfume or deodorant that is too strong

Beware; wearing the wrong outfit may cost you the job.
