What are the do’s and don’ts on how to dress to a funeral service?

Do’s

  • Funeral services differ according to religious background, culture and the age of the deceased. It is therefore essential that you respect the wishes of the deceased families.
  • Remember that it is a somber occasion, therefore, it is not the time to dress as if going to a wedding or a christening ceremony. This is the exact opposite of either a christening or a wedding ceremony.
  • Dress conservatively as if going to a job interview unless the families’ wishes differ.
  • Wear somber colours like black, grey, maroon or prints, unless of course there is a clear instruction on what to wear. I have heard of some families request for people to dress in bright colours to celebrate the life of the dead person.
  • If you are a woman, wear a black or grey dress or suit with sleeves, no flashing of flesh this time please.
  • Your shoes must be appropriate for the occasion. Dark coloured shoes preferably.  Do away with stiletto shoes just in case you need to go to the cemetery to avoid being stuck in the mud.
  • Have your handkerchief or packs of pocket tissue handy as you may need them
  •  Dress appropriately and according to the weather condition. Take an umbrella just in case.

Don’ts

  • Keep jewellery to minimum or nothing at all
  • Do not wear excessive makeup or bright nail polish
  • Do not wear very bright colours unless specifically requested by the family of the deceased person.
  • Avoid wearing stiletto shoes for obvious reasons – muddy ground
